LONDON: A prescription drug sold by Pfizer, a British biotech firm, has been approved by the European Commission for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The drug, sold as Viagra Connect, will now only be available from a UK pharmacy in the US, and will be sold online to help men with the condition.
According to data from the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), an online pharmacy will be able to sell the drug under different names such asCialis,Cialis ConnectLevitraandLevitra Connect, which is also sold in the UK.
The drug contains the same active ingredient, Viagra, as the NHS brand of erectile dysfunction medication. However, the company said it will not be able to sell the drug in Ireland for the same reason.
It said: "The product is currently sold under the brand name Levitra. The drug was originally tested and approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction but has now been approved for other uses.
"Viagra Connect is designed to treat a condition, for which there is no proven treatment, in which a man with erectile dysfunction cannot achieve or maintain an erection for sexual activity.
"Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
The drug works by increasing blood flow to the penis to facilitate an erection. It is only available from a UK pharmacy.
The MHRA said that the drug was approved by the EU Commission and the EMA, which concluded that it is a suitable treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The drug has been compared with Viagra, which has been branded as the "super-potent" drug for men who have a higher risk of priapism.
A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that the drug was associated with a small increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
The drug is currently available only from a UK pharmacy in the US.

Dr. Katlowitz said Viagra was not safe enough to be approved for use in the United States because it was not designed to be safe.
Pfizer and other drug makers say their drug is safe enough to work by increasing blood flow to the penis, but it can increase blood pressure.
“Viagra’s effect on the penis makes it unsafe for use,” said Dr. Paul H. LeClair, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
“It’s very unlikely that this drug will be able to increase a man’s blood pressure and that’s why it is so important for men to treat this condition with a good drug,” he said.
The drug has been nicknamed the “Pfizer Viagra” because of its ability to help patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Michael J. Rosenblatt, the director of the Cleveland Clinic’s cardiology department, said Viagra could be dangerous if it is not taken correctly.
“A lot of men who take Viagra will also be prescribed this drug because of side effects and also because of a lot of the risks associated with taking Viagra,” he said.
Viagra is safe when taken properly, but doctors often prescribe Viagra to patients who have heart problems. But doctors are not advised that people with a known heart condition should not take Viagra.
Viagra may cause heart problems in people with diabetes, which could be dangerous if it is not taken properly.
The drug is not prescribed to patients with pulmonary hypertension and other conditions, but the drug is not contraindicated.
Viagra’s side effects include tiredness, dizziness and fainting.
Viagra has been marketed in the United States since 1998, when a study by the American Heart Association showed that patients taking sildenafil, an erectile dysfunction drug, were four times more likely to get a pulmonary embolus than patients who did not take the drug.
Rosenblatt said Viagra was not considered safe for patients who took nitrate drugs, which contain nitrates. Those drugs are used to treat angina pectoris, a heart condition.
A study published in the December 2002 issue of the American Journal of Medicine showed that the use of sildenafil in women who had a heart condition, such as a history of chest pain, angina or heart failure, was associated with an increased risk of developing pulmonary embolus.
